The Stanford Web Credibility Project found that 47% of users make buy decisions based upon the website itself. What causes people to believe (or not believe) what they find on the Web? The implication of this research is that the website design in general and some graphics in particular are very essential to attract visitors and perhaps stay on the page a bit longer.
The visitor's 10-second window
Research shows that, on the part of the visitors, there is only more or less a 10-second window that they would stay on a website or more specifically on the landing page. When customers are searching for products or services across a variety of websites in a competitive market, decisions about a site's professionalism are often made within 10 seconds of viewing the home or another landing page. Psychologically, they often decide if they are in the "right place."
Small business websites often underestimate the importance of a good and limited graphic look and feel. Sites often exhibit unprofessional graphic design, yet site owners wonder why so many shoppers abandon the site.
What you as a WebMaster can do
First off, avoid the graphics and images implementation as in Jesus-is-savior. This site has other problems too. It is overwhelmingly implemented in graphics and images.
Here are a few points you should keep in mind when designing and implementing graphics on your website.
1. Select an attractive, comfortable color palette. 2. Include attractive product shots that are large enough to reveal important elements. 3. Present simple and effective navigation which shows what viewers can expect to find. 4. Optimize all graphic elements for fast loading and contribution to conversion goals. 5. Keep the page simple, clean, and effective. 6. Insure that viewers can "get it" in 10 seconds or less. 7. Do research using your favorite search engine to find more about it.
In a Nutshell
Good graphic design is too important to leave it to the generals - the graphic designers. It is essential to your success to risk an amateur look and feel.
Unless graphics is in your blood, bring in a graphic designer to help get your site right. However, in your quest for a designer, make sure your designer pays more than lip service to site usability.
Good graphic designers may charge $100 per hour - the price of a decent plumber in New England. That may seem expensive, but great graphics translate to increased sales. Make the investment.
For a website that conveys basic information or personal interests, you don't need to spend an exuberant sum of money. A few pictures and images located strategically on landing pages depicting the essence of your website is all you need.
Last but not least, use limited graphics on a page. It must depict the essence of your website in general and the landing page in particular.
